One would want to measure what value the Coincident uses for its passive pot. Having the pot in the phono stage keeps connection length down and then all one needs to do is keep rca to amp at a minimum. Do you use inputs on the Coincident so other devices are using its passive pot for volume?Meleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17803490723541660219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578688126265821360.post-14991808539679177202019-09-20T18:15:22.357-04:002019-09-20T18:15:22.357-04:00The Placette is a nice piece of equipment. Lot less circuitry in his signal path and a better volume control as well. His modified Ayre drove the passive Placette extremely well despite the subwoofer amplifier being a 12k load on top of Placette's 9K value! Was an astounding change and he bought the Placette unit with 3 inputs and 2 outputs.Meleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17803490723541660219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578688126265821360.post-27864447098653063072019-09-20T17:42:21.015-04:002019-09-20T17:42:21.015-04:00Meant to post this in fairest label thread and hav...Meant to post this in fairest label thread and have done so now.
http://milestomozart.blogspot.com/2014/01/label-label-on-wall-whos-fairest-label.htmlMeleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17803490723541660219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578688126265821360.post-68693187404216069232019-09-19T12:24:38.022-04:002019-09-19T12:24:38.022-04:00I agree that those EMI Cluytens reissues (Classics...I agree that those EMI Cluytens reissues (Classics for Pleasure) may be a mixed bag but are still a very affordable way to hear these great recordings on vinyl. I wanted to do a post about this a couple of years ago but never got to it. I do have the Testament box set reissue of the complete Cluytens set (bought it on Acoustic Sounds for $100 a few years back) and that is very nice. It may not sound exactly like the originals but the vinyl is probably a lot quieter.

I believe we have reviewed at least one of the Munch Ravel recordings on this site.aqlamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14158533801520443218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578688126265821360.post-52945085676287267562019-09-19T12:11:53.896-04:002019-09-19T12:11:53.896-04:00On the Vox a big over site. The pictured reference master cut is side 3 and side 7. Murray Hill has a 5 LP that adds Abbey Simon doing piano concerto in G and For the Left Hand. I've been underwhelmed by my copy of the original Vox Box (Quadraphonic release) despite its presence on the TAS Super Disc list. I'll be checking this out and a single LP turnabout release of the Bolero disc. Might have to get the Recut as well.

I do have some EMI reissues of some of the Cluytens set and they have not impressed. The original Columbia is quite rare so don't miss out on ebay auction where the start bid is just $2500. I just got the analog productions disc (and another for a friend) for $30 each. I'm a munch man at hear and the original LSC in a good copy is a fine LP, but Analog Productions has just reissued that one as well and now just $35. The Munch is a must have and perhaps a review should be done as I've got quite a few lackluster copies. Ravel showdown must be done!Meleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17803490723541660219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578688126265821360.post-80254086118376502292014-04-10T13:30:43.518-04:002014-04-10T13:30:43.518-04:00http://www.acousticfields.com/

The Herron's t...Changes can be very maddening. The Herron's tube sound sound, yet with a low noise jfet greeting the signal from the cartridge, will be very different from the Parasound's cleanness. My system at one point had 42 tubes in it a year ago (and if the power supplies had been unmodded, it could have been 60 tubes). I've always considered myself a kind of super tweaker, but have always been too busy to sink my teeth into the process. For the last 18 months I've been much more aggressive. The short story is that with these changes I've achieved some very interesting sounds, much like the comparison between the Parasound and Herron.

At one peak, I've had shimmering strings with wonderful extension. Too good to be true, but very flattering especially with many of the early Nonesuch. One just sat there listening to textures. This was back when I was still using a tube crossover.

The big changes recently were stimulated by hearing a solid state Vandersteen system distantly related to my own. It ate my bass for breakfast and the quest began. The aforementioned Dr. T suggested I put the solid state crossover back in (which I did not think my preamp could drive). I was not happy with much of the change, but undeniably many things were better. At that point I resolved to chuck the whole tube crossover thing for the time being and pursue improving the solid state crossover as much as possible. My long term kind of guiding principle had always been to take the tubes to a more solid state like sound. However the tuning of the system with the tube crossover in place had led to the above super tube sound and a swing back to some unique and wonderful tube sound eccentricities. With the solid state crossover back in place I've been back on the track of increased resolution and control, a more solid state sound. One of the great surprises with the Black Gates and the IXYS bridge has been the recapturing of a different kind of tube purity I've had on previous systems, a sound I previously associated as euphonic and not accurate (I need to listen to some old friends, i.e. LSC 1984, Munch/Ravel which had on one and only one occasion achieved hypnotic sound.) Of course, the jaw dropper has been the path towards lower noise. The IXYS and Black Gates have really changed my audio world.Meleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17803490723541660219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578688126265821360.post-74054256681630132872014-01-25T20:48:34.962-05:002014-01-25T20:48:34.962-05:00Miles -- thanks for your detailed thoughts on this...Miles -- thanks for your detailed thoughts on this intangible concept of sound floor. I also struggle with this idea, as I listen to LP after LP and ask myself what is it precisely that makes an album so engaging to listen to. Terminology is thrown around all the time to put words on these sensory phenomena, and as eloquently as reviewers can put it, it's not always possible to hear what they hear.

Like you, I've also had some changes take place to my setup at home. Since my last formal review, gone is the Rega RP6, replaced with my beloved VPI Aries that was in storage in Chicago for the last six years. Swapped cartridges and added a used Lyra Delos with not too many hours on it, meanwhile upgrading my phono stage to a Parasound JC3. For about 4 weeks, I temporarily had a Herron VTPH-1 in place of the Parasound, which allowed me to experience the sound of tubes in my system for the first time ever. I certainly heard things with this phono amp that I didn't hear with the Parasound: a certain tangibility to the midrange, for one. I relistened to some of those golden age RCAs, Deccas, Mercuries, and EMIs, and with many of them, it was like listening to them for the first time. The VTPH has moved into my office system, and with the JC3 back at home, I've been trying to do some comparisons. For certain, I may have to modify some of my prior reviews on this blog, since there are now many features that are becoming apparent to me that were not before. Most of them are for the better.

Will be very interested in hearing your upcoming thoughts and reviews with your new Blackgates broken in.aqlamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14158533801520443218noreply@blogger.com
