Comments: I can currently count the number of monophonic records that have been reviewed on this website on one hand. This is not a conscience effort to ignore the vast catalog of fine recordings that were released prior to the advent of stereo but rather representative of the shortage of mono records in my own collection.  That being said, there are a number of items that are certainly worth discussing, and this is one of them.  Wolfgang Schneiderhan is sometimes considered Deutsche Grammophon's "house violinist", and he released several very fine and currently collectible concerto and solo recordings.  His interpretation of the Beethoven Violin Concerto has always been highly regarded, and he recorded this with the Berlin Philharmonic both in mono with Paul van Kempen directing and in stereo with Eugen Jochum in 1963.  The stereo one tends to be better known and more sought after, but in reality, both recordings are very nice.  The sound on this mono release is surprisingly good, with a rich and full sound and pristine clarity.  Schneiderhan's warm, sweet tone is clearly captured, and soloist and orchestra are well balanced.
