Living Decca SXL Blueback Guide
THE WORLD'S PREMIER REFERENCE ON GOLDEN AGE DECCA
{A new title for this page as I can say with confidence that no other resource can compete with our release cross references in the tables below. Our London Stereo Treasury listing stands apart as no other resource has a tenth the information.}[Alert postimage.org recently was cited around April 2018 by the Internet's registrar for a domain definition problem and had to change to postimag.cc so this has busted the majority of our links to covers below. Here is link to the images sorted alphabetically:
(Missing London/Decca Pics) Not all links are busted as a few are to dropbox which I've been using for sometime now.]
Well here it is shoe horned on our lovely blog, a complete "Living" cross reference for the vintage Decca/London LPs and their reissues (no Opera per AQL). This document will be "Living" in many ways. First we will be linking like mad. For the SXL and Blueback CS release numbers if they are alive then you may click on them and the album cover will appear on a new page. If the piece is alive it will bring our review up on a new page (which will have pictures too).
We hope to suss out what is the best pressing for each LP, so for performance and sound ratings we are open ears. We will be marking what we think to be the best sounding copy. This is where our readers come in, so please comment with your ratings and any corrections. Aqlam and myself we'll be working with the format a bit before putting in the links since the blog interface is not flexible, so suggestions early on for format are most welcome.
We can't compress the information any more so forgive us for not having pricing on this page (too much to keep up.) The first column is the original Decca FFSS catalog number (SXLxxxxx). The London Blueback number follows (CSxxxx). You'll note some Decca mono LXT numbers when Decca released no SXL. They have been placed to show up roughly chronologically with their recording dates, so the list starts out with some LXT entries for recordings from 1955 and 1956 and then some from 1957 and 1958. We also have some LXT piles around the SXL2100, 2200, and 2300 marks for the later years. If the recording notes show one of these LXT only releases to be from the same recording sessions as another SXL stereo release, then the LXT is placed just below the corresponding SXL. The great sounding Argenta National Orchestra of Spain and other Spanish recordings are lumped together with the one Argenta NOS release on SXL.
The rest of the columns are easy, if a little cramped, but you'll quickly make them out their outlines as many cell entries are blank. STS is for London STS Treasury with numbers in the 15000s. Next we have Decca Ace of Daimonds (ACE) followed by the coveted Eclipse (ECS) and "The World of..." SPA releases. We almost forgot Decca Jubilee and their pristine sound floor. The Jubilee JB-xxx (JL-xxxxx for hosers in Canada) will have to be thrown in the the rest of the columns where space permits along with the King Super Analogue tube cut reissues. After the P and S columns (discussed next paragraph), we have Composer, Pieces (with Soloist, if any), Orchestra, and the Conductor trailing off the page. Those on Android may not enjoying viewing the grid on their smart phones, but they'll just have to try some times two magnification goggles.
Our P and S columns are for performance and sound on a ten point scale which is 0 to 9 in order to save space, so a 9 is a perfect score. The rating system will be a bit more discriminating then our normal scale for sound in that we will double are normal rating and subtract 2. That means our 5 will be an 8. Only 5+, or 5.5, or 6 would actually translated to the top rating of 9. For performance the ratings will be double our standard rating less 1.
We'd like to link mini reviews possibly when a recording has not been formally reviewed on the site, but that will not happen immediately until we are confident that our external image hosting is working perfectly (the mini reviews would be stored as images.)
Well, hopefully you are as excited as we are to have this resource online. I am sure it will be coming alive quite rapidly so please check the notify box in the comments section at the bottom of this post to keep up to date. We strongly recommend the use of the notify box on all our post comment sections.
See the pressing legend at the end of the list. For a more compact, but lower resolution view of the covers be sure to visit Youngrok Lee's Decca SXL site. And don't miss his complete Columbia SAX covers.

Pressing Legend (this will only be used for the top pressing, which will have yellow lettering and really it should be taken as just the rated pressing for now):
UNALTERED - this means that the LP is the earliest original pressing.
BOLD - bold lettering if the original is a pancake pressing. Pancakes were only possible for early Decca SXL and London Bluebacks. The pancake pressings are fairly thick and have no lip on the outside edge. Decca did not have enough of the new style stereo pressing equipment so often pressed Opera and sometimes the London Bluebacks on their older mono presses.
GROOVED - an underline means the pressing is an ED2 grooved pressing. All original pressings are grooved, so the underline will differentiate ED2 pressings from these. Early STS and ACE are grooved pressings and will be marked as such always. London Blueback releases have similar grooved large label FFRR reissues also. For Decca SXL ED2 pressings, the label will say "Made in England By" instead of "Original Recording By". Please see our AQL Week Special Report: Decca versus London Pt1 for more pressing details.
NONGROOVED - italics means the pressing does not have a groove in the label, but is still a large style label from the later 1960s. SXL, Blueback, STS, ACE, and possibly ECS may have this discrimination. ED3.
NARROWBAND - strikethrough means the pressing is an early narrow band and on all labels these are very easy to spot in person as the label is typically much smaller with a ridge in the dead wax. ED4. Lithium cooled Neumann SX-69.
LATE NARROWBAND - strikethough italics means the pressing is a late narrow band with a record liner of 'High Density' inner plastic - post 1975 (per reader Tin Ear.) Most of these will be the later lithium cooled Neumann SX-74 masterings with pristine treble past 20k. ED5.
DUTCH - bold italics means the pressing is Dutch from the 80s. ED6. The Jubilee JB-xxx are almost always Dutch with dead silent vinyl and some blackness to background for the Salvatore jet setters (resources section). ED6.

What follows is another 69 or so recordings that Decca did for RCA. Many of these later had the rights go back to Decca in the 1970s and so we have reissues. RCA did Victrola reissues (VICSxxxx entries). The SB and ser entries are the British RCA Living Stereo releases. The SB and ser below are in fact Decca pressings of Decca recordings, hence their inclusion in the Living Decca... Guide:

Note:*
As part of the deal by which Decca took over the UK distribution of R.C.A.
recordings from H.M.V., it was agreed that R.C.A. artists would be recorded by
Decca producers and engineers in Europe. This allowed such conductors as
Reiner, Monteux and Leinsdorf to record with the Vienna Philharmonic and
there were also sessions in Paris and in Italy. Some of these recordings (made
between 1956 and 1964) were Decca owned and reissued on Decca labels from
1970; others (notably those with such soloists as Heifetz, Szeryng, Bream and
Rubinstein) remain on R.C.A. labels. Though Decca ceased to be its distributor
in 1968, R.C.A. continued to engage Decca engineers for many of its London
sessions throughout the 1970s.

Just did final major update of spreedsheet, so more comment welcome. We are starting the linking process.
ReplyDeleteOK: I take pity....
ReplyDeleteHave uploaded the Jubilee JB (96 entries) brochure + a Jubilee US insert (35 entries)
PDF to here (the 2nd JL side is overlapped):
https://www.sendspace.com/file/ovhpw5
You can also go to:
http://himahito.web.fc2.com
for the complete LXT series: maybe you 'should' just quote those numbers if there's no SXL (see above)..
I'll sometime scan the Ellingham after tidying pages.
Awesome Tin Ear! I've got all the images updated. I like the idea of using the mono title as filler for nonSXL, though I don't think I'll hunt the photos down for them.
DeleteOn the image front I think we've done quite well with some real drool factor. These are higher quality often then on the rest of the site because blogspot shrinks those down often. This is not an issue with are image server used for the Guide pictures. I need to link to Youngrok Lee has smaller photos but a very handy gallery view for the SXL (and SAX too). It will take some time to fill in the missing photos at this point and perhaps AQL may have a few hidden away.
I need to finished editing a bit and pulling in the Jubilee and then I'm done. From conception to reality in less than one week and I think it will be very handy for myself as a collector.
I just found my first 9 9 (a perfect score) which is the Prokofiev Cinderella (CS 6242). Both of my copies deliver the goods with nice quality and impact in the bass (but not by Salvatore or the Bassophile's standards, who just discovered the mofi Muti pictures.)
Putting the mono titles in was a charm with Philip Stuart's 1426 page pdf on the charm website (find on the CS number). Found a couple EDS, SDD, STS, and SPA links that needed help while doing this. Also brought in a couple new lines for older recording no issues on SXL or CS Blueback. I saw a few STS entries on Charm, but not many, so our guide is a pretty darn good resource on STS and matching them to the other releases.
DeleteThe suggestion was great on the mono titles as the fictitous SXL numbers were in place for sorting purposes in the spreadsheet. Unfortunately, I can no longer update the site with the spreedsheet, so must maintain both of them. The best part of all was that I shortened the Decca column by one character which helped pull everything over a touch (a big thing on a cramped page.) Great, great suggestions Tin Ear!
a) You should be able to individually adjust the columns in Template Settings and relatively increase the main column width..but unsure if you'd need to re-size those, mostly static, big sleeve-covers...
ReplyDeleteb) Combine SPA/JB into a single column - as doubt there was much/any duplication.
I am afraid to touch the thing now, lest it blow up. Well, the JB and JLs will be all over the place for now which isn't qutie fair. Eventually will fix that down the road, but I am done! Luckily that last sideways Jubilee page was the one I had. I think JL is from Canada and they may be guaranteed Dutch pressings. Some JL versus JB fighting over the SPA column, so I will let things settle before doing that. I don't have a tab for Jubilee in my main spreadsheet which is what I really need (or mix with SPA). Jubilee is simple to me. It beats any later pressing probably and gives a great window on the tube stuff. I'd love to hear the Also Sprach which I think is the one from the old Decca and BB which really, really sounds bad (no one buy the original please.)
DeleteA million thanks for your help and I am sure I have more tuning to do as I find little problems every time I look.
I am eager to hear more Jubilee above all and find the circa SXL 6100 stuff very, very interesting. I have the Ashkenazy Rach 2 and it delivers compared to original. Curzon Brahms 1 nice, but still would love to compare with original. Also need to explore my many latter pressings as sometimes they are excellent (sometimes not).
Okay, I used to always pass up these Jubilees in stores, but now I realize that that may have been foolish. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for these!
DeleteWell I now am looking at the guide and ready to stop working on it! We've got images for every release if not both the Decca and the Blueback. This was invaluable in cleaning up the composer and piece information which is now done. If you are confused by the brevity, just click on the LP image. We'll be adding sonic ratings slowly (its been too long to rate from memory.)
ReplyDeleteGoing forward I would love to hear from anyone with superior cover images. I never made this with the intention of it being an art gallery, but some of the cover images are stunning. Enjoy them as many are rarities (that I'd not seen before.)
Many thanks to Tin Ear who's comments have been invaluable and hopefully he'll have quite a few more. I've moved the Jubilee information into place and even did a couple cover shots. Based on my own listening experience with a handful of these I am favoring the dutch pressings which can be astoundingly quiet and have a bit blacker background. Salvatore's Supreme Recordings (and Tin Ear) favor the Dutch pressings. Those in America have a nice advantage as the JL series all appear to be Dutch (covers made in Canada). I am quite interested in obtaining more of the ones in our list as these have sounded the best to me so far, but I think the release for the mid-sixties stuff just beyond our list might really be something (Jubilee is top pressing of Kertesz's Hary Janos Suite at Supreme Recordings.) I've got a few British Decca Jubilee and I've not been too happy. Some of these say they were made in England, but the matrices look very Dutch.
The whole Dutch pressing thing really bugs me right now as I just got Neville Marriner's Early Symphonies Box set and its really quite bad with even some distortion to the sound. My early 90's MHS Europadisk DMM LP's of these works are a revelation in comparison. Europadisk also got all of the music on 6 LPs to 8 for Philips, but has way cleaner sound and it is really well done with a great precision to the sound that really helps convey the classical lines of the music.
I believe at the time of these Decca and Philips had merged and its kind of maddening. I've got an impressive Philips Haitink Tchaikovsky Sym. 5 based on reader John Daniel's advice. Turns out it was pressed in the UK and is great. Just got Dvorak 1 Kertesz JB110 made in England, but Dutch matrices and its noisy and a bit flat. Lyrita ditched Decca for their pressings around when they were acquired by Polygram in 1979 (Philips parent company) At this point I am skeptical on Philips again, except when they are recommended (I've got a nice pile of them here that I need to explore).
Does anyone know the ins and outs of these pressings? Tin Ear?
Thanks, Miles, for all your efforts in putting this together. Assembling all the cover art was quite a task, I'm sure, and thanks to all the folks who took the time to take all these pictures and make them available on the web. Hopefully, this compendium will serve as an easy-to-access reference for collectors. As this is a work in progress, any suggestions to improve the format or quality of information are welcome.
DeleteI'd urge caution re: Jubilee.
DeleteI've not played too many (have just a few dozen and only ever bought 3 myself) - but the first bought (JB15 Ansermet/Crespin) in 1978 was disfigured with tape joins that don't occur on the SXL.
The problem with the Dutch-pressed is they polish/de-horn the matrices - which leads to treble-losses (this was noted at the time re:existing New Malden matrices being re-pressed) and there is a subtle veiling in the post-1980 issues - though some are pressed by Polygram UK - as were most up to JB100, by Decca.
The Solti/Offenbach is my sole JL/Dutch and it didn't match the original - the Strauss/Tuckwell though is superior - the Holst/Boult is just marginally smoother compared to the original 'E' matrices - my Dvorak/Kertesz (#2/4) are way-inferior (these are Dutch) - the Curzon/Grieg etc is superior (JB104: UK Polygram)...but would need to do some additional 'research'...though most issues are outside this listing...however the Decca Chabrier/Ansermet is definitely superior to the SXL, as mentioned before.
I don't rate the Haitink Tchaik 5/UK pressing - though recently got the 7LP Dutch set from eBay for 99pence!
Probably Philips went onto Dolby in the early '70s and I prefer the earlier COA (ie Mahler 2/3)
Well, I am cheap so I can't get bitten too bad. I believe DG polished also. I presume all of the Mercury Golden Imports would be polished. So on UK polygram do they have original Decca metalwork, but just slightly different look? Or do they say made in UK, but totally different typeset, etc from Decca? For Lyrita I've heard of "Decca masterings with the Polygram-style metalwork for SRCS 109 (Uncle Arnold's Dances) and as used for Polygram-eras Decca LP's - coupled with a 1979 Decca mastering..and SRCS 69 ('erbert Howells) with the hand engraved matrices...all dating from 1980/81" Still wondering about Philips UK pressings like on my Tchaikovsky 5th Haitink. Would they be polygram at some point? The Philips Haitink Debussey Images is a great LP and can be had cheap and I can't say the UK Haitink Tchaik 5 is great in the same ways, but it has a nice big sound.
DeleteRees 'Pipe Organ Favourites' appears to be SKL 4043 ... Handel Organ/Richter were CSA2302 (3xLP)
ReplyDeleteLXT5168 had a stereo release as 10" SWL8022 (have 2ss tests) but will mess your listing...as will Tuckwell's first-issue of Mozart HC 2/4 in that series (8011) preceding by 3years the SXL HC 1-4...as with Carnaval/Ansermet (8027) - STS15176: presumably with the Lipatti Schumann PC? as per SDD271
As always I get to research after reading your posts... The SWL must be included so I'll throw them in Decca column. I want anything early in the list is my goal. No brainer if London blueback version. SWL seems to have slighly alluded the swarm too so may have to obtain some of these. Great, working on list now.... I've had to shorten the SWL to WL if not in SXL column... I think I've squeezed in the missing SWL 10" LPs. Just one shortened to WL. Lipatti gets the boot since mono. Amazing catches Tin Ear!
DeleteI've omitted some Britten Pears material since vocal/Opera. Do you feel it should be in list? (Aqlam?)
Charm was missing a bunch, so I've supplemented from eBay and Popsike. Watching one right now....
Delete"I've heard of.."
DeleteQuoting from an old Vinyl Asylum post of 'mine', I see (however old the gibberish is I never forget!)
Got the Haitink/Debussy box in 1978 (?): not to hand...the other Philips query is the UK pressed full-price are all (that I know of) Dutch 670 matrices - however some mid-price 70's are 420 UK Philips mastered.
Actually the SDD Lipatti is phony-stereo (the 80's reprint c/w Gendron's Schumann Cello C is mono - & sounds worse..
I rather like some of the lost stereo on pristine. If you think the Lipatti SDD is a strong recording, given its Golden Age roots, then it should be included. I've got my master tabs now all in one spreadsheet, so other lists are possilbe, but I doubt we would do links (thankfully SDD and STS really boring and the others are not worth the effort imo). We can do lists ordered by all the other labels. I don't have a Jubilee table and so would have to somehow export that back out of the blog.
ReplyDeleteMy UK Haitink Tchaik 5 is a 670 from 1975, so is it polished and did they polish right before pressing which the UK plant might have skipped. (British engineers are a sensible lot who allegedly often did not implement the RCA dynagroove process despite the print on the cover.)
Look though the rest of my Philips on deck and all are Dutch and probably 670 as I stopped looking after a while. My demi-god Haitink images is UK 670. The awful sounding Marriner Mozart Early symphonies box is also 670 (MHS trounces this one.) Golden Import is 670. I may have a few more in guest bedroom, but my sister in from California having saxophone dreams/nightmares. Proud to say I probably bought most of these in a bag at the local Planned Parenthood Book Sale which comes out to a nickel a piece which I consider a fair price for NM Philips and DG .
Noooo idea whether Polygram UK polished/de-horned matrices themselves (Decca, judging by the low-level 'blip' problems I encounter didn't bother (at least earlier-on).
DeleteSome people preferred UK pressings of Philips/DG - which possibly relates to a relatively 'harder' UK Polygram vinyl compound: though 'Gramophone' in a comparison review, nearly 40years back, considered a UK sample to be 'glassy' compared to the German DG pressing; thus the turntable mat, etc, comes into play ('yet more' mechanical compromises'...).
One of the best Philips was the 1971 LPO/Lloyd-Jones on Universo 6580 053 (Red 'Kremlin' sleeve -1/-2) with the splendid Mussorgsky original 'Night on Bare Mountain' - lots of cymbal crashes - really good sound/dynamics - a cancelled Haitink session
Correct about the RCA: Dynagroove new releases stopped in 1966 @ SB6651 (Shostakovich 5/Previn) though SB6664 (Anna Moffo) had RCA matrices - but was a 1963/4 LSC.
Listening to dutch 670 G1 (presumably Burkett mastered) pressing of Dvorak 7 (JB-116) with the Symphonic Poem starting things out on side 1. I'll have to see if I have the original, but I know the Kertesz london LPs cannot do this kind of sound. I hear blackness of background and impressive details poping out. I heartily would recommend it to those desirous of Kertesz. Very nice detail on woodwinds. I've never heard late Decca pressings with this kind of sound and it makes you wonder if Lyrita should have come back to Decca. Definitely a bit of the Salvatore sound (lowered sound floor). This copy is merely in excellent condition and I am not taken aback by the alleged dehorning as the treble presentation is impressive enough. The Nonday Witch poem is from a 1970 recording and the Dvorak Symphony 7 is not in the same class of sound.
DeleteListening to backside of Dvorak sym. 3 LP with Kertesz (JB-112) and it is much better done than the 7th above. The Symphonic Variations is good too and is very close to is sister recording above, Noonday Witch. I've got more, but out of gas for tonight.
So it sounds like you are a fan of the Burkett mastering! I have only heard FFRR pressings of these, but it's been a while and it was not with my current audio setup. Your good impressions of the Jubilee pressings is piquing my curiosity. A local record store has the 3 LP Jubilee set of Marriner conducting Handel's Concerti Grossi Op. 3 and 6. I have the recording on CD but would love to hear it on vinyl. This might be my excuse to pull the trigger on that one.
DeleteThe fact that these Kertesz recordings are later London would suggest that they were probably not recorded or mastered 100% with valve equipment.
Curzon Beethoven PC 5 is really bad on Jubilee and I assume the original would be pretty bad too. After listening to more Jubilee all I can say is they have potential and I might favor them slightly though Tin Ear says they are not always the best pressing. My Kertesz Dvorak 9 LSO was also pretty good on Jubilee, but none of these are reference recordings.
DeleteMiles have you heard the Backhaus Beethoven concerto recordings on London? You might find those more sonically appealing.
DeleteYes, but not Emporer. I like them a lot, and eventually I'll check out the emporer.
DeleteOne of my favorite things to do believe it or not is to listen to MP3s that ebay sellers put up of albums. Its a great way to check out LPs. May not sound awesome on your system, but you can definitely tell when an LP has it or not. If the LP has poor bass, distortion, recordy sound, poor balance, etc, it is easily heard on the MP3. Going through sellers sold items and listening, so might as well make notes hear:
ReplyDelete1. SXL 2001 -- 1812 Overture -- this must have sold really well as this item did not sell for even $7. To my ears this one was not too bad with just a little bit of loss at the extremes. I expect in this case the Decca is better than the London. (Decca first press.) Heard a second copy, again 1812 decent, but crescendos at end distored. Capriccio Italien really does not work on side 2.
2. DECCA SWL 8505 - RACHMANINOV Paganini - KATCHEN - BOULT - ANSERMET -- I had high hopes for this one, but it does not sound great. I'd guess the sister London CS 6153, better. The SWL sold for $50
3. SXL 2012 Peer Gynt -- just bought the London Blue back for $20 (3E/2E). Its decent, but disappointing given the recordings reputation. The Speakers Corner works despite a very dry sound. It has some good bass whack. May have to get the Beecham Hi-Q and try that. Oh yes, the Decca is 6D/2E matrix. Over $500, sounds about like my blue back on Hall of the Mountain King. Why this sold for so much when the buyers could hear the problems is beyond me. Tin Ear's theory of the asian completist collectors devouring the crop of fine British LPs is holding some water on this one. A completist collector will want every title and cover regardless of sound. Many of the EMI and Decca titles (especially EMI) are wanted also for their performances. Combine this with the nice vintage tube sound and the generally rarity of this albums since mainly made for the British market and you have crazy prices. It really makes you scratch your head when the sometimes better London Bluebacks are available for 1/10th the price.
4. DECCA SXL 2026 - SCOTTISH FANTASIA - CAMPOLI - BOULT -- Well I've always wanted this one, the STS of this can sound great if you get a good copy and just throws down a carpet of bass on the Scottish Fantasy. I've always wanted an original, but I'll scratch the Decca off the list since this went for nearly $1000. I keep missing the mark on the Blueback which goes for under $100 (CS 6047). This and the blueback are 1E/1E. This sounds very interesting with a strong bass floor, though perhaps not as ridiculous as the nice STS. I'll have to keep shooting for the blueback.
5.DECCA SKL 4077 - IN A MONASTERY GARDEN - ROBERT SHARPLES -- not in our list and the London blueback is PS 186 which I think I have. Liked side 2 well enough. Side 1 is kind of campy orieintal pop classical but has some nice sounds. Sold for $50 and not bad sounding it all if you like some syrup.
6. DECCA SXL 2044 - LES SYLPHIDES / LA SOURCE- PETER MAAG -- $150. One of my london bluebacks is quite good. CS 6026 I believe and slightly earlier than the Decca. I like my copy quite well, but it does have an almost objectionably rolled character. The Decca sounded like it had issues and maybe was just a lesser stamper off the same mother (1E/1E matrix on Decca.)
... Better publish this as we do have a character limit.
7. DECCA SXL 2047 - MEMORIES OF VIENNA - JOSEF KRIPS -- well I'd say forget this one at $250. It was pretty bad, but the completist collector and lover of vintage tube sound must be willing to forgive a lot. The London is earlier (CS 6007 or something) and the right copy can definitely sound better. Do not pay more than $5 for the London. Very common.
Delete8. DECCA SXL 2086- ANSERMET - SCHEHERAZADE -- $270. I've got like six of these and one is a Decca. Been meaning to listen to them but Decca is not great if I recall. The thin cheap Decca cover has a rip (vintage EMI covers way, way better). Not sure why poeple want the Decca versus the London since the Decca covers are so flimsy. Clarifoil and flipback helps, but.... This one actually sounded promising. Of course don't spend any money on this as you can get nice reissues of the shaded dog with Reiner (LSC). I really like my concert classic with Kletski (SXLP 20026). (Hi-Q reissue too!) Beecham is supposed to be great with this and there is a later SXLP that I would mind snagging on the cheap.
9. DECCA SXL 2113 - MUSIC OF RIMSKY-KORSAKOV- ANSERMET $500... this one sounds pretty good with some crisp treble brass power. My late London pressing with the original cover is probably contemporary with the Ace of Diamonds reissue. I think Aqlam had the original of the London and was not impressed. This Decca is considerably later just by the catalog number (CS 6036 for London) and is 1K/1K matrix. A similar matrix blue back might be a bargain. By the way, a lot of the later bluebacks are quite good starting after CS 6200 so the late pressing might be best if it exists.
10. DECCA SXL 2114 - TCHAIKOVSKY PIANO CONCERTO - CURZON -SOLTI -- someone just paid $50 for a horrid sounding record. I like ASD540 with Ogdon for this piece, but this recording may not be for all as it sounds good on my system, but not so great elsewhere. A Hi-Q is available and might help matters. Not sure what might be the best audiophile Tchaik 1.
11. DECCA SXL 2165- WILLI BOSKOVSKY - VIENNA CARNIVAL -- $70 -- pretty recordy sound on this 1E/2A matrix. I've got the FFSS and remember it being a bit of a dissappointment. Tread cautiously with this one. Its got some brass, but not loving the hall acoustics.
12. DECCA SXL 2174 - SUPPE OVERTURES - GEORG SOLTI -- $70 for this 1E/2E. Not great sound. Get the blue back. I have it and it does quite well on my system and was a real surpise given the rating of this LP in the blueback guide.
13. DECCA SXL 2179 - BEETHOVEN - "EMPEROR" - BACKHAUS -- $270 -- funny as aqlam was just recommending this one. Its not love at first listen....I am underwhelmed. Think I'd rather stick with Barenboim on ASD25xx. 2E/2E matrix might be better. I love the Backaus 1 and 4 on blueback.
14. ASD 330 - OVERTURES - RUDOLF KEMPE - V.P.O. $280 -- this I like. Pretty sure I have the concert classic SXLP 30077. I had this rated for $120 in my guide, so this was a steep price. Seller probably got a bit of a bidding frenzy going with this very promising MP3. I'd snag a semi-circle pressing of this on ASD for about $20 if possible.
Better publish this as we do have a character limit.

DeleteNow it really gets exciting. The seller had some UK SB Living Stereo. FFSS versus Living Stereo in a way as all the SB were pressed by Decca. This is not that exciting when the original recording was made by RCA (I think, and we'll see). However, machines making machines some of the best RCA were recorded by Decca, so some of these SB are Decca pressings of Decca recordings and are really secret SXL 2000 Decci. In theory at least. Here we go....
15. RCA SB-2012 - SWAN LAKE - JEAN MOREL - LIVING STEREO -- $170 1K/1K I like this pretty well. Unfortunately in the US only VICS2002 which is definitely a step down from a shaded dog. This SB is the one to have and its got the goods. The Decca Swan Lake does not excite me much. This seems a bit better. This has a lot of bloom. This is a UK orchestra and the cover says Recorded in Engalnd on the back which I think means this is a Decca recording. Somehow has a living stereo glow if that is possible.
16. RCA SB-2043 - RACHMANINOV CONCERTO NO 2 Rubinstein! $70 -- wow this is a big time shaded dog in the LSC. It may be the best shaded dog that has not been reissued. I've got a nice copy of the LSC. This 1K/1K pressing works pretty well people. You have to have the right LSC pressing to get the full deal with this one and only the earliest ones have just the short Rach2 on both sides of the LP. (Forget the ones that add the Liszt PC on part of side 2.) This SB pressing is very good and worth checking out at this price.
17. RCA SB-2057 LIVING STEREO BIZET "L`ARLESIENNE SUITES 1 & 2" -JEAN MOREL -- $480 Well this is one of the big ones recorded by Decca. I've got the Classic reissue and I can't say I love either. I'd get the Rubinstein. Well, the quiet passage are pretty awesome on side 2. You can't win on this one (I did in a way as I probably got my classic records copy new for $10) I think the VICS US pressing blows and its not helped by RCA jamming another piece on the VICS. I'd really like to hear and have this LP. The SB or original LSC should rule on the quieter passages that prevail for much of the suites.
18. RCA SB-2063 - FINLANDIA - CHARLES MACKERRAS - LIVING STEREO -- $153 -- in the last year I listened to my 3 shaded dogs, my classic, my London STS reissue of this recording. I was disastisfied with all of them and would recommend the Classic, but not this recording. Now.... well I do like the SB, but we still don't exactly have jaw dropping bass. Better then my LSCs and I'd say its the original pressing to get. Seems like this SB might have the goods to best the Classic Records reissue. For a cheap option ASD541 with Sargeant is recommended(reviewed on this site.) It is better than the original LSC IMO.
19. RCA SF - 5004 -THE NUTCRACKER - ARTHUR FIEDLER- LIVING STEREO - LISTEN COMPLETE $7- not supposed to be a great one .... on LSC...The SB pressing does not rescue this one. Run for the original Ansermet highlights on the Blueback (CS 6099?).
Well that's it... and now we see why people like SB pressings. Back 20 years ago these would have been an absolute steel versus some of the high dollar US titles.
19 reviews of MP3s in the comments of an article... Aqlam will be happy.
Thanks, Meles, for the multiple reviews. Just a few thoughts and comments:
Delete1. SXL 2001. I'm in complete agreement with you. I've owned the ED1 SXL and sold it off. It sucks. High volume distortion is rampant on the LP and makes the 1812 overture well nigh unlistenable, especially at the end. I would wager that the Speakers Corner is light years ahead. I have listened to the London Stereo Treasury, and this actually gave some justice to the album. For $3, it's worth it.
3. SXL 2012. The Peer Gynt. Again, I've owned the ED1 and sold it within 3 months. I don't know who got off saying this album was legendary, but the Decca is not. Sonically, it is okay, not what I could call demonstration quality. I would like to hear the Speakers Corner of this. It is NOT worth the money that it garners on the "flea-bay".
4. SXL 2026. Owning the Decca of the Campoli would be a sweet luxury, but at the price mentioned, I'd rather invest that over 30 years for retirement. I second the notion about the London STS. It is one of the very best STS I have ever heard, and I was utterly shocked at the sound when I heard it for the first time. $3.99, and generally not hard to find in decent condition. The guy or gal who paid $1000 for this is a sucker. I would bet that that buyer doesn't even listen to the LP but sits up on top of a shelf away from dust. What a waste.
6. SXL 2044. I have never heard this one, in all honesty, but would be interested. I think the Blueback here is worthy competition. Maag made some very nice Deccas.
7. SXL 2047. Get the STS. It's decent and a bargain. $250 for Viennese pops (and don't get me wrong, I can enjoy a good Strauss waltz) is, to me, a rip-off.
8. SXL 2086. Never owned the Decca but have owned the Blueback. Not comparable to the Reiner in terms of performance or sound.
9. SXL 2113. Owned the Decca ED1 and sold it along with the Peer Gynt within 3 months. This was reviewed on this blog. A real disappointment to my ears sonically and not close to being worth the price. The album to me -- and I have made it quite clear on this blog that I like Russian music -- is a bit of a bore.
14. ASD 330. Have the white/gold pressing but have not yet reviewed it on the site. It is one of the better Kempe EMI recordings and worth seeking. $280, however, is a financial mistake. This album can EASILY be found and purchased for under $200 and usually around the $100-150 mark. The bloke who paid $280 must've been trigger happy on the Bid Now button.
15. RCA SB-2012. Never owned this but like Meles have had the VICS. It was a VG copy that was so dirty that even after I cleaned it, the needle pulled out junk from the grooves. I wasn't able to truly appreciate its music. However, I like any of Morel's RCA Living Stereo recordings, which are all hard to find at reasonable prices.
16. SB-2043. Why anyone would pay $70 for this Rubinstein is a mystery to me. The Living Stereo is much more affordable. The sound is very decent, and I think this is one of only two Living Stereo recordings Rubinstein made with Reiner. From what I understand, the relationship between the two was not cordial.
17. SB-2057. Why the British pressing of this is much more expensive than the Living Stereo, which is already expensive, again blows my mind. I have the LSC in NM condition. The sonics are very nice, with great dynamic range and presence.
18. SB-2063. The Living Stereo has been reviewed on this blog.
Well, I am impressed with the sound of the SB overall. Good to have your comments.
DeleteWould be informative to know how SB's compare to LSC's in general. Maybe on the Living Stereos that were recorded by Decca there may be some improvement in sound, but that is only a hunch and not based on any objective data. Just like the whole Decca vs London debate.
DeleteWould have been nice to snag these earlier on. Valin's RCA Bible appears to have little or no information on these. The Charm Decca database does show the recording dates for perhaps all of the Decca recorded SB Living Stereos. I suppose these are still under priced as I expect the trend is towards the Decca versions selling for more money (rarity and more authentic Decca sound.) I must say my Decca recorded Living Stereo opera boxes are very nice. On average they seem to be much better than the Decca/London opera boxes I have. Perhaps the Decca engineer tried a little harder on the RCA material since they knew it had to be approved and they wanted to one up their RCA engineering colleagues.... I feel an SB list coming on..
DeleteGo for it, Meles. That would be an interesting resource, too, if properly researched (which you have done in the past). I see those SBs sell for much more than the Living Stereos on sites like classicalvinyl.com, though much of this is price inflated in my opinion. Perhaps you should seek them out and do A/B comparisons for the site.
DeleteI've just updated this post to include another 69 titles that Decca recorded for RCA. Eventually we may have some more links added to this, etc. as with the rest of the guide. Above in the comments and in the post itself I have some of the rational for this addition.
ReplyDeleteI seem to recall Tin Ear approving of the SPA Witches Brew reissue for those seeking a better noise floor. I find it very hard to make recommendations on pressings for these. In fact, Classic Records put out so many different pressings of many of the great recordings in this list, that it really has cloulded the landscape on what is the best sounding edition of any of these recordings. (For this British material, unfortunately Chad Kassem at Analog Productions does not seem hopeful of gaining the rights to release the Decca material.) Many prefer the original pressings and recommend the US Victrolas as a good value. I do not like the US Victrolas and might have them as the worst pressing. The Decca SDS, STS, ECC, and SPA reissues are done at their top quality. The US Victrolas seem to be a real step down until you get to some later pressings perhaps.
Some early British VICS might be nice (note some of the VICS did not come out in England). I am also very curious about the British Reader's Digest pressings. Decca engineers and Decca pressings. Somehow the completists don't seem to have stumbled upon these and so the prices seem to be rock bottom. The US Readers Digest records are pressed by RCA, but appear to have been conservatively cut with not much in the bass department.
I'll say one more thing and that is that RCA Eq'd their pressings with subtle broad band controls. I am not sure if this was the case with the British Living Stereo. However, I expect that RCA did not try to EQ the Decca material as much (or at all).
I've mentioned on an opera post on this site, but I do love all of the RCA opera boxes (almost). Great condition early pressings seem to be the norm on the used market. The British boxes are much more than the American in many cases. The RCA opera boxes seem much better as a group compared to the the London OSA blueback boxes I have. I am not sure what to think on the Decca versus US RCA pressings. They appear to be very close in sound. I will say that before paying big money for and British living stereo box sets, see if you can find a US pressing. They are certainly a better value and might have the best sound.
Meles - nice work on the update. Hopefully readers will find this to be a handy reference.
DeleteThe question of which RCA pressing is best is still up in the air. Until only recently did I believe that all the original shaded dogs were superior to the rest, but recent acquisitions have made me seriously reconsider. I think in most if not all cases, the VICS are not better and have a different overall sound. A little bit darker overall, in my opinion, and I've heard others say the same. They are usually quite affordable, especially when the original shaded dogs (e.g. LSC-2449, etc) are in the stratosphere in terms of pricing. However, it seems that even some of those VICS are valuable because of the rarity of the originals.
I have never owned a Chesky and cannot comment on this, but I believe that you have several, and your thoughts would be insightful.
I recently purchased two of Analogue Productions' RCA Living Stereo reissues, specifically The Reiner Sound and Reiner conducting Pictures at an Exhibition. These are two of my all time favorite shaded dogs, and I was very curious to see how the reissues would sound. I got them when Acoustic Sounds offered a 10% off music deal, which put them at about $27 a pop. Production quality is very good, with nice laminated covers and heavy vinyl. The sound quality is excellent. Surfaces are very very quiet, and dynamic range on these two is fantastic. I would need to sample more of these reissues (and I would wager that there will variability in terms of overall sound quality), but I like the detail on these LPs and think that there is more heft to the bass. Bass, as you've commented on before on this blog, was not one of RCA's strong points. These may be the new references, though only a select number will be released.
I also recently picked up two Classic Records reissues, and interestingly, these were both Decca recorded RCA's. The first was Martinon conducting Borodin's Symphony No. 2 and Capriccio Espagnol. The second was Monteux conducting Elgar's Enigma Variations. Both original Living Stereos can fetch reasonable prices if in NM condition. I've owned both and sold both. I liked the original Martinon but was never taken aback by the Monteux. In fact, I thought that the original Monteux was plagued with distortion during loud orchestral tuttis. Not so on the reissues. These Classic Records (both the 180g, not the later 200g pressings, though I honestly cannot say that one is better than the other) are very, very dynamic. The Elgar in particular is far better than the original shaded dog, in my humble opinion. The Borodin is also impressive, though because I thought that the original shaded dog was already very good, the increment of improvement was smaller than that of the Elgar.
Having listened to the Analogue Productions and Classic Records reissues, I'm not sure I'd ever spend big money on an original living stereo again. Perhaps the hard core collector completist will go for all the originals, but sonically speaking, the reissues are at least as good if not significantly better.
I have the Decca Eclipse of the Reiner recording of Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel and Death and Transfiguration. I will have to listen to it again to get a fresher impression, but I thought that it sounded better than the original Living Stereo. More solid state, less tube sounding.
I guess Analog productions is not going to do the Decca recordings so perhaps we should discuss these elsewhere. They did the Leibowitz Power of the Orchestra which has pictures at an exhibition. It was engineered by Decca, but there is no British pressing. I listened to all three available pressings last night. I think the results will be somewhat system dependent. Without a doubt the original VCS2659 has the best midrange clarity. I like the Chesky over this, but that is very debatable (my system has good bass extension.) The Analog productions has that solid state signature but probably is the best overall especially if your rig can really deliver in the bass department. All that being said something like Symphonic Dances or Exotic Dances on Reference Recordings clobbers these in the bass department.
DeleteWhile on the subject we compared two different Classic pressings of LSC2430 Rachmaninoff Paganini with Rubenstein. The later 180 gram Grundman tube pressing won easily on my friends Quad system last night. I can say that I've not liked the Classic tube pressings because of a washed out sound, but this was barely noticable on the Quads. My 180gram solid state Grundman pressing had a more controlled less dynamic sound on the Quads. On my system with its tight bass I expect things may be reversed. I have the original too. Previously on the Quads it sounded positively sick. I loved the LP and it still sounded good on my system, but I prefer by solid state Grundman overall here. Its pretty maddening and I am not sure how one can tell the the two Classic reissues apart. Of course, I've heard bad things about the 200g pressings and the Quadophile has a few of those which we will compare some time. So, its hard to be definitive on what is best. I would imagine if one built a system around the original shaded dogs that they would probably win out versus these reissues. I don't recommend doing such a thing, since nonvintage recordings will not do all that well. Its complicated.
Also compared Heifetz Sibelius Violin Concerto. Original versus Analog productions. Since this is not the most dynamic piece midrange is critical. Here I would favor the original, though the Analog productions is quite excellent. I suppose this might be a sort of recommendation. For orchestral show pieces the reissues will have a decided advantage in the dynamics department. With much of the Heifetz material available for under $100 easily in original pressings, I'd have to favor collecting those. The analog production does not quite have enough rosin on the bow for my tastes.
Perhaps on a solid state system the later Decca/London reissues might be strong values. It is very hit or miss. I'd love to hear some of the 80s Decca pressings. One of our readers Tin Ear is quite knowledgable of these, but they are extremely rare, so the pricing is erratic.
So the great answer to all this, is it depends on many things. If the piece is a dynamic powerhouse and your system is a dynamic juggernaut then it is reissue time. Salvatore's Supreme Recordings rates quite a few of the Classic Records reissues quite highly, but too me they are a bit over rated versus his other top selections. The new analog productions might have the best sound floor of the bunch, but the limitations of the original master tape in this area cannot be overcome by a large margin.
I think its a title by title search for what is best. Analog Productions are very strong contenders and the default choice at this point. The price of used Classic Records vary from title to title and pressing to pressing. I would heavily research popsike and ebay before dabbling in these. Its an easy choice to try them for the Decca material so one can get more of a feel for the Classic sound. The Classic of Royal Ballet sealed is $1400 which is darn close to the price of a NM original pressing. Classic Records depsite the many detractors seem to be doing quite well value wise.
The brain is drained. Happy hunting.
Well I just made another pass at further updating our photos and that went well (snow bound and bored). I've had to doctor a lot of the images from high rez photos where the aspect is way off. Some of these have turned out so well that they may look better than the real covers. I made a particular effort this time to brush up the blue backs which are really unique to this site. They are largely complete up through CS 6369 (SXL 6059) as are the Decca. Enjoy the new photos.
ReplyDeleteA couple of additions to your list on the Decca pressed RCA's
ReplyDeleteLSC2177 SB2013 was also released on VICS 1011 (grooved Decca)
VICS 1036 was also released under the same number in the UK (grooved Decca)
LSC2288 SB2061 was also released 0n VICS 1207 (grooved Decca)
Thx Andy! Updated. Those vics entries are complicated, maybe upper case for UK, lower for US.
DeleteNoticed you had no cheaper option for SXL 6056 / CS 6354. This was reissued on ECS 823. SQ is good
ReplyDeleteNoted and editing. Please bust me if I miss any of your suggested updates. We need your ratings on SXL and ASD, so feel free to input anything you like and I'll update these two guides.
DeleteI keep imagining I've acquired that LP in the last year. For US buyers given shipping the London CS is probably cheaper than the Decca. I'd definitely favor the Decca as I expect these came off the presses around the same time, and probably the cherry stampers went to the SXL. Is this a good one? This is right around the time where I think the last recordings/LPs made by Decca had the full tube sound. Good Mozart in a Golden Age pressing is a rarity.
DeleteI just completed a King Super Analogue sheet and have pulled all of the applicable titles into this guide today. In doing so discovered a few missing Monteux recordings (Beethoven Symphonies). Several of these were only put out on the later VICS issues and the Super Analogue version is a very attractive option (Monteux's 3rd is excellent, but US vics is well a noisy, recordy sounding LP, but still musical). One Monteux is not in our list since only later issues exist (no golden tube pressings); CS6400 with Mozart, Bach, & Gluck was recorded in 1963.
ReplyDeleteAdded an early Szell recording of Tchaikovsky Symphony 4 which he did not approve for release. Posthumously, Decca put these out and their is a Super Analogue.
LSC 2326 was released on SF 5054 in the UK
ReplyDeleteCool. I failed to find that in my research and I also have an STS reissue of Clair De Lune. Updated.
DeleteExcellent. Found two more SF titles, one of which, LSC 2407, was not in the list at all!
DeleteJust updated with our final set of covers to complete the Decca SXL and London Blueback gallaries!
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Youngrok Lee, manager of the linked you offered kindly here.
ReplyDeleteMy homepage url is changed to http://trmsolutions.co.kr/music, therefore the pages you linked were also moved as they are subpages of the domain. I'll appreciate you very much if you correct the urls.
Dear Youngrok,
DeleteThank you very much for visiting our blog and for leaving a comment! We will try to change the URLs of the links above to the updated ones. Both Meles and I have been avid fans of your website, and your site inspired us both to search for these Columbia SAX and Decca SXL recordings and to offer readers high resolution photos of the covers as well as a brief review of the performance and recording quality. If you are interested, we would greatly welcome the opportunity to talk to you about your experiences as a collector. Thank you again for your interest in our blog!
