Reader Poll: Your Favorite Beethoven Symphonies

Reader's Poll

Over the next 9 weeks, we will be surveying readers for their favorite analog performances and recordings of each of the Beethoven symphonies. Favorites can be for interpretation, sound, or both. To respond, just click on the comments link at the bottom of this post. The cumulative results of this reader's poll will be summarized and posted at the end. To start off this series, we'll begin by asking:

What are your favorite vinyl recordings of Beethoven's 6th Symphony (Pastoral)?

  1. Columbia MS 6012 (six-eye pressing): Bruno Walter / Columbia Symphony Orchestra. A beautiful performance on one of US Columbia's best sounding LPs. Released in Europe on Philips Hi-Fi Stereo (plum label) 835 507 AY.

    1. If anyone has done A/B comparisons between the US Columbia/CBS and the Philips pressings of the Walter Beethoven symphonies, I'd love to hear your thoughts. My experience with the Philips issues of US Columbia recordings has been not the best, but I'm curious as to whether or not more attention went into the Walter recordings.

  2. Hi,

Rene Leibowitz with the Royal Philharmonic on Reader's Digest (and Chesky) recorded by the 'dream team' of Wilkinson and Gerhardt in Watford Town Hall - early 1960's.

    Cheers,

    1. One that I've wanted to hear on vinyl but have never gotten a hold of the box set. Great choice.

  3. I don't have one I love, Interested in Cluytens on ASD 433 or Szell on Epic/SAX, and for sound Reiner on Chesky/RCA.

    1. Have the Cluytens on ASD semi-circle and will revisit that tonight. The Szell can be bought much more cheaply as Epic gold pressing (less than $10 vs $100+), which is decent sounding.

  4. Tie between the Cluytens and the Klemperer for me.

Have the Klemperer on all SAX labels plus the ASD reissue and the Cluytens on W/G ASD and CFP 40017. The CFP can still be found for next to nothing.

  5. Yeah - also I'm quite happy to go with Cluytens/BPO - on CFP vinyl.
