  1. I like the Heifetz recording on RCA (LSC-2129), but my favorite performance is Campoli on London CS-6011 (also on Decca SXL-2029). I have owned copies on both labels, and did not hear great differences between them. In a non-audiophile world, I would also include Mischa Elman's recording in mono on London.

    1. I like the Campoli Bruch Scottish Fantasia LP a lot (STS). I'd swear I have CS-6011, but I think I've just seen the cover too many times. Thx. On my list to acquire (hopefully its hiding in a nice pile of bluebacks.)

  2. One of my favourite pieces of music that I never tire of.
Difficult to pick an outright favourite but I do tend to listen most often to Leonid Kogan on SAX 2323 also CFP 40083
Another favourite that notwithstanding the tape hiss being a little intrusive is a great performance from Erica Morini on Westminster WST 14017
I also greatly enjoy the following for differing reasons
Michele Auclair on Philips SGL 5815 also Fontana SFL 14059
Ostrich live recording with the Moscow state Philharmonic Sept 68 on Meloydia C 01779 82
Oistrakh & the Philadelphia Orchestra on MS 6298 also SBRG 72064
Gidon Kremer with the Berlin PO & Maazel DG 2532 001
Anne Sophie Mutter Vienna Philharmonic HVK DG 419 241-1
Ruggiero Ricci LSO Sargent SXL 2279 also SDD 126
Kyung -Wha Chung LSO Previn SXL 6493
Campoli on SXL 2029 also SPA 183
Christian Ferras Berlin PO HVK DG 139028
Nathan Milstein Pittsburgh SO Steinberg WRC ST 574
Igor Oistrakh Moscow PO D Oistrakh ASD 2813
Hyman Bress LPO Boult Crossroads 22 16 0224
I would concur with the Elman mono but my copies on ACL 25 have better SQ than the LXT 2970 copy

  3. I have four versions, two are with Michele Auclair! Wagner/Innsbruck on Fontana, and Woss/"Austrian SO" on Remington. The latter possibly not the best sound I've ever heard but the (violin) performance is stunning. Also like Perlman,Leinsdorf/Boston on RCA (white pup).
    Cheers,
    David

  4. Thanks for all the rapid feedback! I'll have to concur with AndyW and say that the Kogan SAX is probably my favorite for performance and probably sound, too. In close tie for second would be the Heifetz/Reiner RCA Living Stereo, Campoli London/Decca stereo recording, and the Oistrakh Columbia/CBS stereo recording.

  5. Hint:
WRC ST562 is the Kogan SAX ($7000). Same stampers down to the matrix (1/1).

  6. Impressive. I wonder how it would fare head to head against the blue/silver or a semi-circle pressing.

    1. Should be very close, but the WRC mentioned is for the Lalo/Tchaikovsky Kogan SAX 2329, not the record under review.
